Gibbs-Von Seutter House (1836)

The Gibbs-Von Seutter House is located at 104 Dupree Street. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is an example of the Transitional Federal/Greek Revival style of architecture.

Built in 1836, the Gibbs-Von Seutter House, located only blocks from the heart of town, relates to Raymond’s earliest years as the seat of Hinds County. The Gibb’s family, prominent citizens of Raymond and owners of a large mercantile store, was one of the first families to settle in Raymond.

During the 1850s, the house was purchased by Elias Von Seutter, an Austrian immigrant who wanted the home for his bride, Julia Hoch. In the years prior to the war, Elias Von Seutter was recognized as one of the finest jewelers and photographers in the state. The Von Seutter family remained in Raymond until the war robbed them of everything they had worked for. Without means, they were forced to leave Raymond and move to Vicksburg before finally settling in Jackson where he resumed his business.

In 1896, Andrew and Fannie Shearer purchased the house. Mr. Shearer was recognized as a successful merchant in Raymond. The house remained in the Shearer family until 1999 when it was purchased and restored to its original splendor by Earl and Shirlee Lawson.

The Lawson’s enjoy the ambiance of living in a house with such a rich history. They particularly enjoy sharing the history with guests and enjoy entertaining those who stay in Oak Hill at the Gibbs Von Seutter House, the bed and breakfast facility. In 2003, the Gibbs-Von Seutter House was featured on the Home and Garden television series If Walls Could Talk.

The Guest House in the rear has been turned into a quaint Bed & Breakfast furnished with antiques, but with all the modern amenities: private baths, cable TV, phones, etc. Welcome beverages and breakfast in the main house dining room are provided for guests. Oak Hill at the Gibbs-Von Seutter House is conveniently located one block from the historic Raymond Courthouse and one mile off the Natchez Trace Parkway.
