Live Oak is located at 227 West Main Street. The house, featuring a spacious open porch, was built in increments starting as early as 1857 when John W. Peyton purchased the property. Based on notes provided by Opal Peyton, now deceased, the J. W. Peyton family, and later his descendants, lived in the house until around the turn-of-the century. Through the years, the Peyton family added on to the 1850s structure until it assumed the attractive Victorian era appearance that is seen today. The house is located in an idyllic setting. Across the street is the Methodist Church, one of the oldest church sites in Raymond, and three doors down is the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Before the advent of cars, the walk to town was only minutes away. In 1919, Graves Kelly Williams, purchased the house and the home remained in the Williams family until it was sold by Jane Williams Vandevender to Cliff and Nancy Hale in 2003. The Hales have enjoyed researching the history of the house and the families who have occupied the home during past years. |
